Useful phrases to use in Indonesia
When you are travelling in Indonesia, it is easy to get around and ordering your food although some local phrases might come in handy. If you are a Malaysian or Singaporean, chances are you would have no problems using and understanding such phrases. So it is essential that you should at least know a few words or sayings which would help you to get around.
[B]The usual greetings[/B]For starters you should know how to greet people
Apa Kabar is used to ask people ‘How do you do?’. To reply you say, ‘Kabar baik’, which means ‘I am fine’.
Good Morning, afternoon and night would go with ‘Selamat Pagi, Petang and Malam’
Good bye – Selamat Tinggal or Jumpa Lagi (see you again)
Thank you – Terima Kasih
You’re Welcome – Sama-Sama
[B]When addressing someone[/B]I – Saya
You – Kamu/Anda
We – Kita/Kami
He or she would go with ‘dia’
There are some strange words used though when addressing with Mister (Mr) you use ‘Bapak’ while Missus (Mrs) is ‘Ibu’.
Expressions
At times, it is essential to use a bit of expressive words like ‘a bit’ or ‘a lot’ which in Bahasa Indonesia ‘Sedikit’, ‘banyak’. Eat is said as ‘makan’ while drink is ‘minum’.

No – ‘Tidak’
Sorry – ‘Maafkan saya’ (which actually means pardon me)
