Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java

October13

The Ujung Kulon National Park is one of the most beautiful and nature rich national parks in Indonesia. It is located in West Java in the southern-western regions along the Sunda shelf. Its location covers the Ujung Kulon peninsular and spans across to many islands along the coastlines here and also the Krakatoa natural reserve. Ujung Kulon National Park is the first national park in Indonesia to be declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO gaining the international recognition in 1992.

Among its main attractions here is being home to the largest remaining lowland rain forest in Java. The peninsular here was previously made up of agriculture land which was widely affected and changed significantly during the 1883 Krakatoa eruption. This is where it is the natural habitat of the endangered species, the one-horned rhinoceros. This is the rarest large animal int eh world and is also home to the Javan Rhinoceros as well. There are only one other known natural habitat to this animal which is in Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park. There are currently only about 60 Javan rhinos left in Indonesia while in Vietnam only about 10 are left. This is due to the killing of the animals in the 1700s when it was known to be damaging to plantations as well as the hunt for rhinoceros horns.
