Lombok – the ‘unspoiled’ Bali
Lombok is an Indonesian island located in the west of Nusa Tenggara and is part of the Lesser Sunda islands group. It is located towards the eastern side of Bali where it is very much known as the ‘unspoiled’ Bali what with its natural heritage of untouched sandy beaches, gushing waterfalls as well as the majestic Mount Rinjani.
The Lombok Strait separates Bali with Lombok where you could enjoy the tourists friendly resorts and places of interests here which are mainly operated by the locals here unlike Bali which is more commercial.
Over at the west side of the island you can find the towns of Bangsal, Tanjung and Mataram where they are known for their sandy beaches as well as being the exit point towards the Gili Islands, another famed tourist resort. The northern regions are known for its natural attractions here like the Mount Rinjani, famed and popular for its highlands and waterfalls as well as the home of the Waktu Telu.
The southern areas have many nice beaches with surfers coming in to enjoy their sport along Kuta and Tanjung Aan. The Gili Islands are made up of small islands, a common diving destination and foreign tourists in its Gili Air, Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno islands. If you go towards the Central and Eastern regions, there are many traditional attractions here while its beaches too are very popular.
If you plan to visit Lombok, you must know the weather here and if you are a surfer or here for diving, it would be more significant where the island is drier as compared to Bali. Hence, the peak tourism season here is around the months of May to August while the other months are rainy seasons although Lombok rarely experience heavy and long term rain which makes it ideal for visiting throughout the year.
To get here, you would need to come in through the Selaparang International Airport in Ampenan which is located along the west coast side of the island. It is the only operational airport here located in the city of Mataram and if you are coming in from Bali DPS it would only take a 25 minutes plane right through Merpati Airlines, Garuda Airlines and many others.
