Bandung – the shopping paradise
Located on the West Java of Java island, Bandung is known to be one of the most popular shopping destinations for tourists who come to Indonesia. It is the capital city of West Java where it is also known more fondly as the Parjis van Java which means Paris of Java for its minor resemblance of Paris.
The city was also previously very much renowned for its naturally beautiful flowers where it was also known as Kota Kembang. Bandung is the third largest city in Indonesia where the largest is Jakarta and then Surabaya. The nice thing about Bandung is that due to its natural location of 768meters altitude and engulfed within the Parahyangan mountains, it is cooler than most major cities in Indonesia.
The city has a population of 2.7 million people and you can reach the town through the Hussein Sastranegara airport but due to the cit being a highland, the bigger planes might not be able to come here. However, most budget airlines like Air Asia, Merpati Air, Malaysia Airlines have flights ferrying in on a dialy basis. If you want to you can also drive here through the new Cipularang road which connects Jakarta with Bandung. Driving here is now very easy and takes only about 2 hours.
Its natural surroundings here meant that you will most likely be taking a walk around the highlands, jungle trekking or out enjoying a night out at the city. If you head out to Jalan Dago on a Saturday night, you will see how the locals here enjoy their night life and activities. This is where you will see the younger crowd hanging out for a good time on a weekend. It is quite a long stretch here where you will hear a lot of loud music, chatters and many others. If you survive the Saturday night and manages to wake up early on Sunday, you can head out to Gasibu Park which is at the Gedung State Complex where the early fitness birds are up and jogging. It starts at 5am so you might want to get an early start here.
The other main attraction here is shopping. The ‘Distro’ here which means ‘distribution outlets’ here have been mushrooming up recently. This is a continuation and the maturity of the older trend previously where there was a lot of sisa exports and factory outlets. Generally you can find a lot of cool things to buy here (particularly apparels) at factory and wholesale prices. Most factory outlets here are around the Jalan Riau, Jalan Dago and Jalan Sukajadi-Jalan Setiabudi areas.
